The thyroid is situated at the front of the throat near the trachea, at the same level as the larynx.  This unique gland consists of two cone-like lobes joined by a small bridge, the isthmus. Its weight is approximately 30 g. 
It produces hormones with the aid of iodine extracted from the blood. 
Hypothyroidism is the medical term for thyroid underactivity. The condition is sometimes difficult to diagnose, and takes time to manifest itself. 
- Logically, the symptoms are diametrically opposed to those of hyperthyroidism: slower cardiac rhythm, sensitivity to cold, muscle tension, weight gain, constipation, lethargy and apathy expressed in cerebral and emotional indolence (people lose interest in activities and their lives). 
- These symptoms are sometimes misinterpreted as signs of old age or even as an incipient depression.  It goes without saying that these symptoms cannot necessarily be attributed to a thyroid problem, but this possibility should not be excluded, particularly after the menopause.  A hormone assessment via a blood test can confirm the diagnosis.  
When they grow older, an increasing number of people suffer from a dysfunctional "internal thermostat".  Exhaustion, cold hands and feet, hyper-sensitivity and depression are frequent symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Patients who are treated for these dysfunctions often complain of pain in different parts of the body.
