Cholesterol is an essential substance and an important structural component of our cell membranes. It is produced by the liver and also supplied by the food we eat. In addition, cholesterol ensures that our nervous system functions correctly. However,cholesterol comes in two types, "good" and "bad".
High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are responsible for transporting cholesterol to the liver, where they are subsequently excreted. This ensures that the cholesterol doesn't collect in the blood vessels, thus reducing the risk of developing atherosclerosis. HDL is termed "good cholesterol" as a result. Low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) are a group of lipoproteins of different types and sizes (18 - 25 nm in diameter), which transport the free or esterified cholesterol in the blood through the body to the correct cells. LDL is produced by the liver. It is often termed "bad" cholesterol, in comparison with HDL, which is considered "good". However, an overly high cholesterol level is one of the main risk factors endangering the cardiovascular system... Too much cholesterol in the blood causes the artery walls to thicken (atherosclerosis), thereby encouraging the growth of atheromatous plaques. These subsequently block the arteries and can result in heart attacks or strokes. |
