BUT WHAT ACTUALLY IS ALCOHOL? Alcohol is extracted from the fermentation of sugary plants or distillation, and used in the production of alcoholic drinks, such as wine, cider, beer, rum, schnapps, vodka and whiskey. In the short-term, alcohol triggers a state of intoxication which can result in traffic and industrial accidents and domestic violence. In the long-term, regular alcohol consumption leads to dependency, expressed by compulsive drinking. This dependency has serious effects on people's social status. Excessive alcohol consumption over many years can also have damaging effects on the body, particularly on the liver and the nervous system. Liver damage leads to adipose degeneration (steatosis), cirrhosis and alcohol hepatitis, and also accelerates the advance of hepatitis B and C. Damage to the nervous system interrupts neuron activity and causes cognitive disorders (tasks are carried out more quickly, but more mistakes are made), amnesia and perception disorders, a reduction in creative ability, disorganised movements and confusion in the form of Korsakoff's syndrome, or amnesic-confabulatory syndrome. Many people know the immense difficulties associated with treating the effects of excess alcohol consumption, because the emotional and motor apathy which results is very strong. Once people start drinking, it is very difficult to decide to stop. |

What Type of A Drinker Are You?According to a recent UK Department of Health study, there are several reasons as to why people drink to excess on a regular basis. They have identified nine main groups or reasons why people drink heavily. Heavy drinking is defined as 35 units per week for women and 50 units per week for men. This is twice the recommended limit. Although this is obviously just a general guide, where do you think you fit into this? It may be you fit across categories or even have other reasons outside of the nine presented below. However, it is a useful guide to start looking at the causes for your heavy drinking.
